The Marketing of a (Fame) Monster

Forbes recently posted an article detailing how Lady Gaga is the music industry's "new business model". Gaga has become a music superstar in the less than a year, having the best debut album of 2009 as well as having the "most downloaded tune in the history UK digital music". The 23-year-old performer is known not only for her music, but also for her unique and risqué outfits and performances. These attributes have become the foundation for the singer's success and popularity.

Through her varying appearances, Gaga is able to direct "every frame of her music and her life" and imagine "how clips will appear on YouTube and what people will tweet". And as shocking as these performances may be, Gaga still garners attention from late-night talk shows and corporate marketers.

Not many, if any, artists are able to fully market themselves like Lady Gaga. She has successfully created her own image, brand and even more so her own monster.
